Sexing Saharans-please help!

orbisdraco Jan 26, 2005 05:06 PM

Hello,
I recently got 4 Saharan Uros and I need help sexing them. 2 are red phase and 2 are yellow phase, I am pretty sure that I have a male and female of each, but I don't want to depend on the colorations for sexing. I know that the females are duller than the males, but they ALL have the little waxy points on the underside of their rear thighs. Is this normal for males AND females to have? Does anyone have a good pic of the underside of a male and female Saharan (or commonly called Nigerian)? Thanks for any help you can give. Oh, also, if I take an x-ray to sex, what would I look for? I work at a vet clinic, so an x-ray isn't anything expensive for me to do. Thanks!!

If your saharans are adults they should be easy to sex. Adult males are more brightly coloured but they also have colourful bellies the females DO NOT. The females will have smaller femoral pores and their heads are smaller than the males.

Here's some photos of my Saharans' bellies. These are red phase, but I think the yellow are similar.

The female:

The male:

The female is also much more delicate about the head than the male, and smaller in size. He's heavier in the jaw and jowlier. You can kind of see it in this one:

Thanks for the pics, that helps! I will have to wait until mine are adults, right now I am guessing the smaller ones are 2 years old and then I have 1 female who is about 4 years old. None of them really have an stripes on thier bellies, but the younger red one definitely has coloration, so I am guessing he is a male. I just wish there was a better way, other than just guessing based on colors and shapes! I will try to get some pics of them so everyone can give me THIER opinions! hehe. Thanks! -Jenny

If they're all that old, I believe they should have at least some belly color if they are male. Doug Dix told me at a show (when I was trying to determine Arthur's gender) that they start showing *some* belly color by the time they're about a year old.

I second el_toro. If they are juveniles they should have coloful bellies if they are males and literally no color for females. If three of yours have no color then you probably (90%) have 3 females and one male.
