Who has the best Mossy's? Red, Pink, light purple?!!!

Rhacophile Jan 26, 2005 05:49 PM

Me and my partner have just branched out from only breeding cresteds to purchasing a "pied" mossy female for a cb high end breeding project. I read a care sheet about them and it had this to say. "The U. sikorae usually has an over all brown color that closely resembles the pattern of tree trunks, sometimes with patches of green to imitate lichen that grows on the trunks. Occassionally all green, bi-colored (green or brown and white) and specimens showing red, pink or even light purple are found".
Who knows where I can find these Red, Pink or purple ones? And at very least purchase any kind of above average mossy's.

i would imagine that one would need connections with someone high up on the importing chain, or otherwise you'll just have to wait and see. never seen any funky colors, although ben smith has a picture of a female henkeli with purple coloring. as fair as pied mossy's i see them around time to time in the classifieds. i would just call up the people who have them for sale, see if they can email you pics or at least describe the patterns.

any uroplatus is difficult to come by right. all i can really suggest is keep checking the classifieds and try to get in touch with certain people who commonly have them when shipments come in. as far as coloration, i would say i have never seen anything but " pied" ( coloring and brightness varies) almost solid white, white with blotching, and bark colored with green. never any red, purple or whatever other colors you mentioned. those colors i've only seen in satanics. as of now i would consider just about any uroplatus that you can breed successfully " high end" and only after you successfully breed them would i try to get certain traits out of them. they are by no means as easy to breed as cresteds.
here's the dark blotch

here's as much of a pied as you're probably ever gonna get. doesn't seem to be too uncommon. the one on the wall is the same female as the other photo above...

Correct me if im wrong but arent all leaftails polymorphic or are just satanics that way. i thought i read some way that it would be difficult if not impossible i am not trying to dissuade you from trying, i just thought that you could not breed them in "morphs" like you see cresteds or cornsnakes , for that matter. if you are able to let us know.

i don't know much about the subject, but it seems that you would still be able to selectively breed certain traits. not necessarily as defined as say corn snake morphs, but a " pied" mossy to a " pied" mossy would create more mossys that are " pied" than say a bark looking mossy leaftail.

I think some people should talk to the amazon tree boa people, they are the champs of polymorphic reptiles. They selectively breed colors quite often and get mixed results but they always get one or two that are in the direction they want.

pretty good idea you got going there. i know one thing i will be doing as things progress with my breeding success is taking pictures of parents and babies and noticing as much as possible. all i can say from last year is that yea, satanics are polymorphic. my first brick red female helped me produce 3 babies, 1 of which is a really dark purple, one which is a little bit lighter purple with more veiny appearance, then theres the one that i know came from the male i had. it resembles its mom with its red and resembles dad with the patches of lighter color, and its also one of those males that has the very smooth-edged female-looking tails. one of my eggs that should be hatching next month is from a pale purple female and a darker male with some green spots and the smooth-edged tail. still dont know exactly what to expect, but my hopes are up. the recent 2 eggs i got were from a solid dark purple female, but i have seen her mate with 2 different males, its most likely from the dark colored male that was responsible for the other egg. hopefully once they all hatch, ill be able to get a better idea of the color variations coming from the parents.

also i was wondering, has anyone ever seen a bright red phantasticus male? all i've ever seen are females and ive just been wondering.

wow, that's a beautiful male! looks a lot like my one highly patterned red male i produced last year. but i was actually wondering about solidly colored ones. most of the pics i view are ones for sale lik eon the classifieds here. im sure theres gotta be some out there, but it just happens all i've seen in the past were solid red females.

One of my female mossys is almost completely pink and purple on her belly and the underside of her tail, but from above she is a regular piebald color. She is almost 2 times bigger than all my other mossys, and I always have wondered if maybe she is some sort of undiscovered subspecies or something. She is not a sameti though.

flamedcrestie Jan 27, 2005 04:32 PM

i "pied" female also has a peachy/pink color. i would consider this normal and definately would not call the gecko pink because of its belly.

lismil Jan 28, 2005 12:52 PM

While the geckos belly is bright pink/purple, I was not calling my gecko pink. I was just stating that, because maybe that is where the pink in the description this person read came from.

flamedcrestie Jan 28, 2005 04:55 PM

i'm aware, i wasn't saying it as a bad thing, i was just stating that mine is also peach/pink and would not refer to my gecko as pink because of it's belly ( because he said pink/purple geckos)
