Lighting wattage and color temp?

ghostingrey Jan 26, 2005 06:32 PM

I'm working on designing the vivarium setup for a pair of tincs and had some questions for more experienced folks regarding watts and color temp. Currently leaning towards the AH Compact flourescent. Tank size is 20 gal tall. I want to ensure healthy and vigourous plant growth of bromeliads to mosses. Should i go with 55 watt fixture? Single or double. Or is 36 watts enough. That seems low to me. Thinking at least 55 is necessary. Anyone have preferences on color temp such as 5000K vs. 6700K Thinking of going with a lower, warmer temp. Let me lnow what you think folks, i'd appreciate the insights.

I would say 55 watts minimum if you want high light plants like broms and even Java Moss to be at their peak; and I would personally go a little higher to 2 40 watt or one 65 watt. 6500K is going to be a whiter light, but either color would be fine.

Allright, thanks for the info. I was thinking 55 watts or more would be necessary. 5600 K seems like a good middle ground color temp i think.

i have the dual bulb setup for my tank from ahsupply.com. for broms and the such i've found that the 5500K to 6000K bulbs are best. they say a brighter bulb is better but i've noticed plant growth is alot faster with my current 5500K setup as opposed to my 6500K bulbs. my broms have also taken on a nice red color rather than just green with the 6500K bulbs.
