Aaaahhh the aroma!

As mentioned in a previous post I fed my 04 red, male a frozen thawed dekay's snake a few days ago. Well it came out the other end tonight and WOW that was the nastiest crap I have ever smelled and it was loose so it ended up ALL OVER the cage!

Remind me to not feed snakes to my indigos very often!

(ME) Heh. Welcome to the aromatic land of indigo-go. Fast metabolism. If they weren't the coolest snakes this bonus feature wouldn't help them as sought after animals I've started just wiping it up after the second or third day after feeding. Myself, I don't believe in powerfeeding. I WILL cycle mine for a month of good feeding and then let it go through a month or two of SPARSE feeding (less and/or not as often). I have also noticed that they drink a lot more than most snakes. Guess that helps 'em grind out the stench fest faster
Mines growing very nicely even with the cycling. Can't wait til spring or summer and I'll take him out and get some decent pics of him.

Indigos are messy snakes, that much is a certainty.
How you cage them, what you keep them on, and what you feed them all factor in heavily.

You are right when you assume that they drink alot more wateter than alot of other colubrids. They also tend to cycle their food through FAST, processing it in mere days.

Yet...even with the extra work, they still have a loyal following of committed fans.

I do not advocate power feeding, not only because it compromises the long term health of the snake just for short term monetary gain or ego satisfaction...but also because the more you feed, the more you will clean...*Guaranteed!*

Enjoy your Indigo, they are truly awesome serpents,

Sincerely,

Long term, would be a good idea if you invested in an airpurifier, does wonders.......

I have to agree with you Fred, Indigos have their quirks, regarding their metabolic rates and aroma, but I believe such to be part of their appeal. The extra maintenance involved equals greater quality time spent with our charges.
I have seen a lot of folks speaking of their beliefs regarding "power" feeding. Personally, I feel as though it is almost impossible to over feed a Dry under one year of age, so long as a high quality variable diet is maintained..

Best regards,

Jeff

Oh, I know full well about the stench of indigos because i've been keeping them for the past 3 years (yeah, I know that means i'm still a rookie! ) but, this was WAY worse than anything i've ever smelled coming from one of these awesome critters! LOL

I've raise an eastern from Chuck on a mouse diet several years ago and had to finally sell her due to the smell(had no room to keep her in except the bed room). A yellowtail and now an unicolor. No bad smells from the cribos. Why do easterns smell so bad? Do texans have the same smell? Thanks, Steve

Funny thing that even feeding my Easterns the occasional trout or smelt the smell is still about the same as if they had eaten a rat. I find my Bullsnakes & Russian Rats have a much more disgusting smell when they crap than the Indigos. Find the Indigos have sort of a 'canibis odor' to it.

Just my 2 cents
