decoy for frogs?

Hlynn1975 Jul 05, 2003 09:15 PM

Hi all,
I have a ceramic frog that is sort of cute. I was just wondering if i were to put that in with dart frogs would it act as a sort of decoy making the real frogs think that things were safe and they could come out of hiding or would it jsut be a silly ceramic frog in a dart frog tank?

Thanks,
Heather

No the ceramic frog won't fool them. They use many other senses to detect another animal than vision. However, it's your dart frog tank and if you want to put it in, do it. You may prove me wrong, who knows? It won't hurt to try. The frogs may utilize it for something else or simply poop on it. My son, who is a sculptor, carved me a "belching frog," that he insisted had to go inside one of my dart frog tanks. Click the link to see it still sitting outside the vivarium next to a plant which was actually the subject of the photo. When I introduced it inside, the immitator frogs thought it's belching mouth (complete with a carved uvula inside that I have explained to my son frogs do not have) full of water was a great place carry their tadpoles to, preferring it to the bromeliads. It may be a bit declasse' to the purists, but it is certainly harmless fun.

A very nice redition of the Phyllobates terribilis 'very disgusting' morph during its post dinner mating call! I love the fact that tadpoles are developing inside!

they would more then likely see it as a stump since it is not living, nor moving. If you havent had your frogs long it might take a few months for them get come out of hiding.
