Question about housing.

fruitionx Jul 05, 2003 09:25 PM

Hi,
I am new to leopard geckos, but i own a uromastyx. I was interested in getting a leo too. But anyways my question is what kind of substrate is ok. i have heard that moss is ok to house them on is this true? also can you feed them those Can o Warms and Can o cricket products or is that bad to only feed dead ones?
Thank you!

I wouldnt use the moss for the whole cage, just the humid hide. With moss throughout the whole cage, it would get too humid for the leos, which could cause respiratory problems. I would suggest using paper towels, slate or washed playsand. Only use the playsand for adults though. Also, most leos wont eat something that isnt moving, so obviously the dead ones wouldnt work. I would just stick to the live mealies and crix.

I have found that most leos will not eat food that does not move, so most of the can-o products won't work. Live crix and mealworms have worked well for me. As for substrate, i use paper towels and newspaper. You could use slate/tile if you want a more natural look. Moss is fine for geckos humid hide, but not throughout the entire cage. Good luck, and let the forum know if you have more questions.

I agree, my little sweetie won't eat unless it is moving,it's the thrill of the hunt ! I also keep her on paper towels, quick and easy to change and clean, also keep and extra square in her potty corner(leopard geckos like to go to the bathroom in the same spot) so you can clean that as she goes.
Good Luck!
This is my baby April !

Some say sand is fine, but I have had scary experiences with it and so I do NOT recommend using sand if you want to decrease your risks of eye infections and intestinal impactions. Any small particled bedding will do this. Moss will make the tank too humid and the leo could end up eating it and getting sick. I use paper towels and deocrative floor tiles for substrates which are safe and easy to clean. Safety comes first!!!

I use slate tiles they are very easy to clean, look great, and have excellent heat transfer....
