Nasty poop update - need help with giving medicine

JandM Jan 26, 2005 09:48 PM

As I suspected, at least one of the girls has intestinal parasites. The vet did a fecal exam and prescribed oral meds. Two times daily for ten days. How am I supposed to get those in?? Asking nicely doesn't work! The one that is OK being handled opened her mouth, licked a little off of the syringe and quickly spit and shook her head wildly. The other thrashed, scratched and bit while I tried to hold her -violent and wild. No medicine in her. So what do I do??

Which parasites and what meds, if I may ask? And o boy yeah its not easy to medicate them especially with some meds that taste bad. It takes a technique and everyone kindof develops their own that works for them. Did the vet show you how?
What I do is come at the side of their mouth with the edge of the syringe and sortof "pry" their mouth open a tiny bit and quick put the syringe in so they bite on the tip but cant close their mouths. then I can squirt the stuff in. you have to keep their head still enough during this and a little while after to make sure they dont just shake it right back out. Hopefully the vet gave you extra meds for the practice trys Truly, a lot may get wasted while you work this out and if you run out, tell the vet, there should be no problem with getting some more.

Thank you for your reply. The label on the bottle simply lists it as "SMZ TMP Liquid (pill vial)" 0.05ml twice daily for ten days. It is a pink liquid that apparently tastes awful.

It's going to be a long ten days!!

Would that be Baytril, maybe? ring a bell? Anyway, sometimes it can help to wrap them up in a towel. I find it easier to kepp them from swinging the head side to side if there's a whole bunch of towel bunched up around the neck. Just don't squeeze A second person may or may not be helpful. How big are these guys? You can sometimes trick them if it's only one drop (which is probable) by giving a few drops of water first on the nose, then switching to the awful stuff. I will say after the first 3-4 doses, they do get used to it. Depending on the indiv, this can make it either easier or harder. Good Luck and keep trying!

It's not baytril...it's a weaker antibiotic (Septra) 0.05 cc is not very high for it.
