Blizzard,?

jheep Jan 27, 2005 12:19 AM

I was going to breed her (to my albino and hope for a Blazing Blizzard next year), but from all the pictures I've seen of Blizzards, she's pretty dark. Her belly and under her tail is pale, but that's it. I think she's about 7 months old and seems she's gotten darker since I had her. Do you think she's good enough Blizzard quality to breed? She does that shakey leg thing too, but that seems to be common. Or should I try with another Blizzard?

It's so hard to tell the difference between dark blizzards and patternless leopard geckos. Unless you've had her since she was a baby you may never know. Before breeding her I would definately try to fatten her up first, she's a little thin. Also the shaky legs is a common sign of the begining stages of MBD. Rule out MBD before you even consider breeding her. If she does have MBD one set of eggs could kill her by absorbing the little bit of calcium she does have. I love www.drgecko.com, check it out to see if she has any other signs for MBD. Good luck,

Ok, just thought I'd make a correction so you dont get your hopes up, breeding a blizzard to an albino will not creat a blazing blizzard, it wont even produce a blizzard or an albino for that matter, just a normal looking leo that is double het for blazing blizzard, and then you woul dneed to breed it to ANOTHER double het for blazing blizzard that shares the same albino strain as yours to get a 1 and 16 chance of getting a blazing blizzard. As you can see, it is a very hard morph to produce
As for the color in your female being fairly dark, i've found that a lot of the color in blizzards depends on their mood, if my blizzards are stressed at all they will darken, but if they are warm and unbothered they will take on a brighter shade, I would suggest that you make sure all of the temps in your cage are right.

If you breed a normal blizzard to a normal albino you won't get a blazing blizzard. The gecko isnt naturually dark it looks like it is stressed but not so much you'd think it was a midnight.

Thanks for your inputs. I know I won't get any blazing blizzards from breeding her to my male. I know there has to be some inbreeding (that's why I said that I hope for a blazing blizzard next year) to do that.
I posted a message about the shakey legs when I first noticed it (November-ish?). I don't remember anyone responding with MDB as an answer, but I do remember someone saying it wasn't uncommon. I have a cap of Miner-All and I dip heads of mealworms, silkworms and wax worms (on occassion) in the Miner-All before I handfeed them.
I have a thermostat with the hot spot set over 90 (I think about 92/94). There's 4 hiding places (she has her favorite) and a humid hide).
I also have a patternless and they don't look much alike at all.
She's fatten up a lot since that picture. I don't think she would eat much if she was stressed. I'll try to post an updated picture.
Any other suggestions about her color?

Just be careful with the shaky legs. I think I posted to you back in November about MBD but it might have been a while after you posted or something. Are her legs more shaky than you other geckos legs? Are they becoming more shaky than they were in November? If she is gaining weight that is a very good thing and it most likely isn't MBD. Does your calcium powder have vitamin D3 in it or do you have a UV light? If not that is almost a sure way to get MBD. Another possibility is that the powder has expired and lost it efficiency.

Sorry I have no idea what morph she is. Patties and blizzards come in so many different shades. In any case if you don't get blazzing blizards albino patties are awesome as well.

you don't necessarily need to inbreed the geckos.. just buy two unrelated pairs of albino and blizzard geckos. then cross the offspring of the two.. i'm sure you are looking to get more geckos (they are addicting) so here is just another excuse to do so..
