Age and fertility?

Philodryas Jan 27, 2005 05:14 AM

I have a Gloydius blomhoffi siniticus that i bought about a year and a half ago, i don't know her age but i would guess somwhere between 6-8 years old. My quetion is... How long are they fertile? I'm picking up a male juvenile at a reptile expo this weekend....At what time are they sexualy mature and will she stay fertile long enough for the male to reach sexual maturity and get a chans to mate?
Excuse my bad English but i hope you understand the question.

Best regards, Ronny Levin

In my humble opinion, I believe that the male might be sexually capable as early as a year and a half old. Males seem to mature more quickly than females, especially when in captivity and subjected to regular feeding schedules and no predators to worry about (less stressful living situation.) We have had snakes (venomoous and non-venomous) live for as long as 30 years plus. I would assume that your female will be fertile when the little guy reaches maturity. In the wild, females sometimes don't mature until they are 5,6,7 years old, and then only breed every other year. With all this in mind, hopefully you will be successful in breeding these.
