Subrate oppinions?

parselmouth Jan 27, 2005 10:27 AM

What do you guys like to use for substrate? I've been having good luck with desert blend, i keep it deep about 4 to 6 inches and my western is able to burrow really well. I made him a moist hide with a ziploc plastic container with a hole in the top. I burried it so the top is level with the substrate and then i recently used hot glue to cover the entire top (except for the hole) with the desert blend. I've found that it has been much easier for him to find the hole to enter and exit the hide now. His eyes had turned opaque for a while, at the time he was living in his water dish which is why i added the moist hide. His eyes have turned back to normal, but he never shed. Could they have just turned white because he was submerging himself in water. ?thanks in advance

Aspen is the standard, and I really don't see any reason not to use it. My experience with sand substrate is that it chronically clogged nares on the snake.

I just use paper towel. right now my grey eastern is on display at a reptile exhibit, and to make it look nice, and to also keep it humid, she's on calcisand... but I hate the mess that makes, and how difficult it is to keep it really clean, so I dont use it at home.
