Opening a tortoises mouth (pics)

EJ Jan 27, 2005 11:55 AM

Rapunzel, I'm sorry I got these to you too late but it might come in handy in the future.

This is how you open the mouth of a cooperative tortoise.

Note the tongue color. It should be pink ot light pink for a healthy tortoise. If it is cotton white there is something wrong.

This is how to open the mouth of an uncooperative tortoise. Note that the front leg is gently moved to the side of the shell and pinned there by the thumb. (excuse the focus, it was stressed too much to get a better shot) This is wide enough to get in a tablet. By gently pressing the toothpick against the roof of the mouth or tongue the tortoise will try to get it out and open wider. If you have to tube feed it, a #7 french catheter can be used to give fluids or meds.

For the fluids I would suggest Pedialite and Petinic or Gatoraid. I think fruit juices have too much sugar.

I appreciate you taking the time to do this. I will file the info away in brain storage in case it becomes needed at a later date.

You're welcome. Lots of people ask for that picture so I have them saved.

Good luck next time.
