South Texas report; Dusty Hognose around Houston?

t7phage May 15, 2003 10:55 PM

5-12-03 (Monday) I made a run through south Texas. Moved a Texas Tortoise off the road about dark. Saw 9-10 C. atrox, a L. annulta in the shoulder (lost in tall grass), an A. elegans (beautiful- too underappreciated), P. Cornutum, and numerous Scaphiosus before heading back about 1:00 AM. More mammals were active than herps ( saw my first S. texas badger).

Anyway- I'm doing some hunting this weekend near Houston. I am looking for a pair of east texas dusty hognose. Does anyone have some productive areas thay might share?

Thanks

I do not believe they are found very near Houston anymore...All I find are easterns (caught about 5 in the past month). I have heard (I believe from chris h.) that they used to be in Barker, but after searching much of the area, I have seen nothing. I have gone through some of Brazoria county as well as a lot of Harris and still have yet to see one. My best advice would be to go west and maybe a bit south of Houston, but I am not sure on their ranges now a days. Andy
