You can't tell by looking at the bottom.
Males have long thick tails, females have short stubby tails. Males have long nails, females have short nails. Look how long my male's nails are.

News to me.. I was told if they had concave bellies they were males... hmmmm .. guess I better look closer at his/hers butt and nails then..lol..

Turtle species that mate on dry land have concave plastrons, but aquatic turtles like RES don't need them because they mate underwater. At least that is what I read somewhere.
