Heating a danged glass tank....

crtoon83 Jan 27, 2005 07:02 PM

I have a 20 long (12" high) and a 29 gallon (18" high) glass tank that are both set up with climbing wooden dowels for the snakes, however they're getting ready to move up to my new big cages i built and i'm going to be putting my texas bairdi in there. I was wondering, if i put an UTH in there would it be able to heat the ambient air temp in the tank well enough? (These two both love to climb) Or should I just stay with blacklight, possibly go to a CHE?

Thanks,
Chris

I was wondering the same thing. I built a melamine cage that is 36"x16"x16". To run a test while I am waiting for my glass track to come in, I have 3-3" x1 foot 6 watt flex watt daisy chained together. My cage is on its back, and I put a thermometer right on the wood over the flex watt. The temp for 2 days is about 86 degs. I move the tmeter 1 foot away, and the temp is what it is in my basement, which is 64 degs. I even covered the openings with wood hoping that it would trap some heat in there, but it did not seem to. I'll know better when the tank is all put together with the glass. I may have to make my heat tape longer. -Kingsnaken

I have a 29 gallon glass tank also. It has a screen lid covered almost completely with a glass top, and it's heated only by an 11"x11" Ultratherm UTH (from Bean Farm). The room is usually 73-74 degrees, and the hot side of the cage gets up to about 80-81. The cool side stays around 74-75. That's where it seems to max out. I'm going to add a bulb to mine to help keep temps up.

Hope this helps!

Chris, what i have done in the past is line the sides and back with 12"x12" cork tiles. I get the tiles at home depot, they are usually by the picture frames, craft area. Cork insulates well, and gives the viv a nice look. Clint
