PTS Care sheets

burmaboy Jan 27, 2005 07:52 PM

Can anyone direct me to a good care sheet for PTS?
I am finding so much contradictory info on them.
I would love to be able to get more than one, so I can glean the best available, and use info from all. This way I can develop the my own care program.
Thanks

Im keeping my 2 PTS for 18 months right now and they are doing great. My PTS are different from my other reptiles because they dont have a fixed routine.Sometimes they dont eat for 2 or 3 days.Sometimes they sleep for 2 or 3 days in a row, sometimes they are very energetic during the day, sometimes they are very energetic during the night.

They need a vertical cage, a huge one, more than 4 feet high because they like to climb. They love pothos plant and other greens, like mustard greens, pumpkin, carrots, collard greens and fruits like papaya, kiwi, etc.You must keep the humidity level high but if this is impossible during the winter because of the heating please put inside your baby's cage 2 bowls of water.A small one for drinking and a huge one for bathing. If the humidity level is not high enough he will immerse his body in the water bowl quite frequently. Keep the water clean.MTSs like to poop in the water.

Sometimes PTSs like to hide during the day.So it will be great if you can provide a hiding box for yours too, placed on a high platform.

The temp inside the cage must be high, around 72- 75 during the night and between 80-90F during the day. Some sites recommend a maximum temp of 86F for PTS during the day but my PTSs prefer when its hotter.

PTSs CAN become VERY tame.Stupid tame if you handle him/her frequently, never scare him/her, etc...etc.. But on the beggining you must be careful because their bites are very painful. But if your PTS already knows and trusts you he will not give you a painful bite. When i moved from Malaysia to India i took nine of my babies with me, including my 2 PTSs.Leonardo my monkey tail was not happy with all the changes i was forced to make in his life and he bit me to show me he was not happy. It was not a pinful bite and it didnt even bled.

Im including a photo of Leonardo's cage.On the top of the cage you can see one of iguanas, TREX. He is twice this size right now!lol!

I have maintained several PTS for about 4 years.I believe that the humidity is crucial and that is very hard to maintain with "open" or cage-type enclosures. I have a trio of compatible PTSs that live in a glass and wood enclosure that is 6 feet high, 4 feet wide and 2 feet deep. I have found that an elevated feeding and watering platform work best. I also have a 2 gallon cool humidifier running most of the time. Daytime temp at the hottest part of the cage is about 90 degrees F. Night time temps go down to about 75. I'll try to dig up some photos.

Here's a picture that doesn't really show the cage that well. Its one of my females in the center of the cage. You can see the edge of the feeding platform in the upper right corner
