Beardy with Eye Infection

bkiba Jan 28, 2005 03:33 PM

Hello, for a little while now (1 or 2 weeks) my female beardy has had some blackness around her eye. I figured at the time it was from her tankmate being to "rough" with her while attempting to mate. It did not get any worse so I didn't think anything of it, actually it seemed to get better over the course of a week. Last night when I got home her eye was swollen. The tissue around the eye is swollen and it looks like it is pushing her eye down in the eye socket. It looks painful. I did some research and she may have lack of vitamin A. I've been feeding mainly crickets for the last few months - mostly out of laziness to be honest, they are from the local pet store so I doubt they are sufficiently gut loaded.

I stopped at the store today to pick up some multivitamin (with vit A) and fed her directly by mouth a water / vitamin drink. Is there anything I can put on her eye to make the swelling go down or prevent / fight infection. Thanks in advance. I will post a pic as well but my camera needs to charge right now.

A few things I noticed here:

First off, I hope the female isnt living with the male permanatly. That can stress her out immensely, not to mention the amount of eggs and the toll it will take on the female. How old are they?

I would seperate her from the male immediatly, especially because she is injured. You dont want her to get injured further.

I would suggest bringing her to a certified herp vet to get her checked out. Usually making diagnoses by ourselves without the trained eye can be difficult and is often wrong.

Good luck, keep us posted.

dmlove,

thanks for your reply. I plan on taking her to the repti-vet soon. She has been living with the male for over a year now, but I have seperated them. Over about 1.5 yr period she had 3 clutches of eggs in a short span of time (about a year ago) and hasn't laid any eggs since. I believe the female is 4 going on 5 and the male is 3 going on 4. Thanks again for your reply
