Question about albino genetics

toshamc Jan 28, 2005 05:36 PM

I'm starting to think I should just start off all my posts with:

"Another Stupid Question"

Is there a difference between the albino genes? If you breed a high contrast albino to a het albino (amelanistic albino) what do you end up with? Would you get two albinos (maybe one high contrast and one amelanistic, two of either) and two hets or are they different genes? What about a high contrast albino to a lavendar or carmel albino?

Thanks!

Here's what I can answer.
If you breed a high contrast albino to a lavender or caramel albino, you will get all double hets.

I could speculate on the rest, but we'll leave it to someone who actually has bred high contrast to normal contrast albinos.

Not to knock you for a thoughtful answer but aren't you speculating even on this?:

"If you breed a high contrast albino to a lavender or caramel albino, you will get all double hets."

Do you know of anyone who has actually made these crosses? I know RDR tried some sort of albino (aka amelanistic) X lavender but didn't get any good eggs yet. I'm not aware of anyone even trying the albino X caramel. The assumption is that albino/amelanistic, lavender, and caramel are three separate genes but I don't think anyone has really proven it one way or the other yet.

I guess the real question is if the double hets will look normal. You might still get double hets from caramel X albino but if the two mutations are alleles (different mutations of the same gene) the double hets might not look normal. Maybe they would look like a really nice caramel.

Randy, yes you are correct.
I wasn't thinking, my previous statment must also be taken as speculation.( man I must be tired tonight)

I do know someone who has been working on the albino/caramel but no definite results have been determined (just speculation).

Sorry for my lapse in brain activity.

I was wondering about that myself. Since they are all called "albino" it really makes you wonder! Now I am really curious. Anyone have the means to test this?
