if u have ny small rivers, try there. There should be a lot of smooth rock. You could also try some store with stones for front yards and stuff...i'm not sure what they're called. Because the stones they give you for landscaping come in different sizes, and are smooth and flat.

Don't buy rocks from a pet store if you can avoid it, they'll rip you off. It's a rock. For the smooth kind check in rivers and streams. Or people's front yards. Or a gardening/landscaping store?

Take a drive in the outskirts of the city, look for any rocky embarkment and you can find suitable rocks. They don't have to be really smooth, just no sharp jagged edges. Check around to see if there are any rock quaries in the area, they should have unwanted granite you could take. Most quarries won't care if you take a couple rocks from their yard.

We just went down to the ocean and got a few of them this weekend. We also got some shale there, too, but after getting it home decided it didn't clean up as well as we would have liked.

I went to a landscaping establishment and asked the owner how much he would sell me a big rock for. He told me to go outside and pick one out and he would let me have it for free, if I would just let people know that if they needed landscaping to come to him. So he let me have it free. My husband broke it up and I was able to get 6 diffent good sizes from it for each one of my tanks. Home depot also has white granite in the gardening department.
