Leopard Gecko who is starved

doublwaterp Jan 28, 2005 08:51 PM

I am taking care of a gecko that has not been feed in a long time. You can see his shoulder blades as well as hip bones. On top of this he is blind. I made a mixture of gerber graduates turkey sticks and water. I mash it up and make sort of a shake. I have been feeding him with a eye dropper. I was wondering if anyone has any suggestions on how else to take care of him. This is the first gecko I have taken care of. I was also wondering if once he got his strength up if he could eat on his own even though he is blind or if I will always have to force feed him. Thanks a ton for your suggestions.

do you know if it's blind? Sometimes this is hard to detect and extreme lethargy may be cause for lack of response. If you are just gecko sitting the number one thing you can do is not return the animal. Otherwise it sounds like you are on the right track. Make sure to keep very good records on how much your feeding, defecation, fluid intake, and also very important, the weight. Once more bright, alert and responsive you can try offering a few prey items and see if you get a response.

Most importantly; take your gecko to the veterinarian at the FIRST sign of decline as it won't take much for this little fella to perish. It would be a good idea to look up a good herp vet in your area now, just in case.

Good luck
