Help. new BP and probs already...

babystolemydingo Jan 28, 2005 09:41 PM

Ok I went and got a BP at a store that told me he wasnt CW.

Well when I got him home in better light, i noticed a teeny bug crawling on him and his eyes look wrinkle-ey or cracked. Its hard to explain. I called when I got home about his eyes, they said it was because he just shed. But i didnt notice the mites until now, and its closed.

should I just return it or with that NIX treatment work? how bad are mites? ive never delt with them b4.

I dont want the mites to go to my Geckos or Beardie.

Please respond.

oops not CW.. I meant WC lol

(he is CBB)

I'm a newbie with absolutely no personal experience with mites, but from what I've read those little suckers can travel considerable distances in a single night. Therefore, keep that snake far away from (other end of house) your other animals.

Just a quick heads up,
Chris

well what do i do?

the pet stores are all closed. i dont need them spreading to my other pets. (can dogs/cats ect.. get them?)

He is about 18 inches maybe a lil longer. is the NIX too strong for him?

If i were you...i would get in my car and drive to Wal-mart.
Go to their garden section and get yourself a small bag of sevin dust(5%).

There is a thread a little further down this page about this very subject. In case you dont see the thread i am referring to,then here is the address link.

but walmart is closed. only place open right now is our grocery store. and im afraid by morning there will be a chance the mites will have traveled to my other pets.

and there is the thing about his eyes. they look super dry and crusty.

should he be returned or are all these probs minor and very treatable??

coldthumb Jan 28, 2005 11:19 PM

...well.
If you have had him anywhere near your other animals enclosures, then it doesn't matter either way.As now,you will have to closely monitor your other herps for the pesky little pests anyway.

What do you mean Wal-mart is'nt open !?!? (O_o)
You mean to tell me there is actually a wally that isnt 24/7 ?
..wow..small town.lol

..not sure about his eyes.Could you post a picture?
He could be dehydrated and have a retained shed over his eyes as well.If this is the case, then yes by all means, very treatable.

If you are feeling ripped-off then take it back, but it sounds like an average imported "bush baby" to me.Which could do very well under your care, but its your call...

wow, he has only been here for a total of about 6 hours, ya think the mites have spread that fast :O

And yup, no 24 hr walmart. Closest one is an hour away, its 1 am now, by the time I get ready to go, and get back.. its almost worth just waiting for ours to open.

sigh..

and yes, i took a pic of his/her eye. its posted in a new post above.

Hi, I'm new to Ball Pythos myself, but Peter Kahl has a whole article about mites on his website. You can start with washing him off and drowning the mites by giving him a bath. Hope this helps. Nix is very toxic and can possibly kill him.

I hate pet stores (most of them, anyway.) They'll lie to you and say "oh yeah, this was captive bred." But ask them for the name and number of the breeder, and they clam up! That's cuz they're probably lying through their teeth. It is much cheaper for them to buy cheap imported "captive hatched" BPs.
If it has mites, I might be tempted to return it to the store and get a refund. A stressed snake with mites, plus possible dehydration and retained eyecaps, is not a good first snake. But some smarmy pet stores will refuse to give refunds.
