Safety Hatch Incubator Drying My Eggs Out.... Type of Container?

LeosAnonymous Jul 06, 2003 12:05 AM

Hi Everyone,

I just bought a Safety Hatch incubator from Big Apple to replace my multiple Hovabators.

I set my eggs up in the Safety Hatch earlier this evening, well I checked on them a few minutes ago and the are already showing signs of drying out (dimples).

I have the eggs set up in Rubbermaid Shoeboxes, with the top completely "clicked down". The vermiculite/perlite mix is moist enough, so my only conclusion would be that the shoeboxes do not close tightly enough to stop the fan/air circulation from drying the eggs out.

Can anyone suggest an alternative to the rubbermaid shoeboxes?

I'm thinking Glad/Rubbermaid food storage containers perhaps...?

Thanks for the help.

Hi,

I am not familiar with that model. I use a Hovabator and was advised by an experienced breeder not to get the Hovabator model with a fan. Can you turn off the fan in this unit?

I'd disable the fan and add a little more moisture to the substrate to help them plump up again.

I definately can't disable the fan with this incubator, it works by blowing hot air over heating coils and into a seperate compartment where the egg containers are.

Also, correct me if I'm wrong, but in the ball python video the Sutherlands keep their eggs in basically air tight containers right and remove the lid every couple/few days for air exchange? (I'm going to have to go and check now)

Hopefully I can figure this out... as of now all my eggs are back in hovabators.

Thanks again for the help everyone, if you guys have any other ideas please post!

Because if its about few days before hatching, then I would have to say that the dimpling is normal..... From what I do know, many breeders put them in a tub or container then cover them with a clear pane of plexiglass or glass... Opening them every other few days for the air exchange.... Check out their websites theres bound to be TONS of infos there somewhere!
