Sand will work ok but in your situation I would stick with paper. Sand is dirty and dusty; even the washed playsand. You will have a dust film over everything in your place. I use sand for the chucks and there is a film of dust over everything in the lizard rooms. If you are really intent on it the cleanest sand is the $5/bag stuff at Toys-R-Us. It is very light in color and not very natural looking but is by far the cleanest and the best I have used. Forget the stuff from Home Depot and Lowes(Gibalter and Great Lakes brand), The stuff is terrible and you will wake up with sore throats and congestion every morning. It is a mess. I found what works excellent is corrugated card board. Most mail stores will order it for you or you can order it on-line and it comes in any width you want so you can get it to fit your tank then all you have to do is cut it in length. I think they cime in 250 foot rolls for anywhere from 6" to 6' wide. I think the 30" wide roll is about 35-45 bucks. Good luck, Tom
