Chris, Thr right one is acually almost Identical to the 100% het pied. That is one reason that will be his girlfriend in the future. I believe since they look so much alike that they could be the same gene. They both blush in the same area kinda like a Ringer but nowhere near as nice as a ringer. They both have a yellowish orange coloration near the same area. But who knows, I just thought it was odd that a farm raised baby and a captive born 100% het look just alike near the lower half. There should be lots more CH hets than pieds.

If hets where distributed randomly in the wild at 1 in 200 it would only result in 1 in 160,000 wild bred babies being pieds. Even though the pieds would be very rare, out of a shipment of 1,000 ch there would be about 5 hets. What makes the pieds rare is the 1 in 40,000 chance of two 1 in 200 animals randomly pairing up.

The problem is I don't know how randomly the hets are distributed. They might be locally concentrated in a small area allowing the 1 in 160,000 pieds with a much lower het rate due to localized inbreeding.

There is also the problem of false positives with the marker. Are there other conditions (like whatever causes ringers) that can look like a pied marker belly?

I'd definitely breed them to the pied though (actually I have a pet store marker girl breeding to a het pied male right now) and let us know how it works out please. It’s fun to think that with non-random pairing based on belly marker someone could start a pied project with a pair of $6 imports.
