Mixing Species . . . the forbidden act!

RaverTanker Jan 29, 2005 02:24 AM

Okay, I know it is not often recommended, but does anyone have advice on mixing green and brown anoles? Do brown anoles get territorial with green anoles? Will brown males go after green females or green males go after brown females? And then any info on creating a balanced habitat for both colored anoles and Green Tree Frogs?( I decided to keep a few to put in my new 60 gal terrarium) I hear Tree Frog's are quite amiable. I was thinking of a waterfall/fogger combo, potting soil substrate(though perhaps reptimat), bunch of silk leaves, couple vines, a few various shaped logs/, 8 inch diameter water pool and a lighting combo of Exo-Terra's 75 Watt Night-Glo/60 Watt Sun-Glo/Repti-Glo 5.0 (for vitamins). Also what the heck does this mean:

2.0.1 - Anolis Corolinensis
0.2.0 ect, ect?

I have seen this a lot, will someone explain it to me, thankz all in advance.

Brown Anoles are generally larger and more aggressive than Green Anoles. Besides, they will make a meal of any Green Anoles they think they can overcome.

I can't help with the species thing, but the numbers are easy. First one is how many males, then females, then unsexed. So
1.2.3 green anoles is one male, 2 female, 3 unidentified.

1.1 African Dwarf Frogs (Bruce and Sheila)
1.0 Betta Splendens (Mr. Miagi)
1.1 Felis Domesticus (Roscolux and Jenny)
And several miscellaneous community fish

"Do brown anoles get territorial with green anoles?"

Absolutely. In my experience, sagrei and carolinensis seem to treat each other, in many ways, as if they were the same species.

"Will brown males go after green females or green males go after brown females?"

They most certainly will. I've personally seen a green male get hold of a brown female.

In my opinion, and others here may disagree, mixing sagrei and carolinensis is not nearly as potentialy problematic as mixing completely unrelated species with anoles.

"And then any info on creating a balanced habitat for both colored anoles and Green Tree Frogs?( I decided to keep a few to put in my new 60 gal terrarium) I hear Tree Frog's are quite amiable."

That can be a problem. You need to figure out exactly what species of frog you're considering and check to make sure that it can tolerate the temps in an anole tank. Different temp requirements are the biggest issue here, I think. I would think that an anole environment would be a little too hot for Hyla cinerea. You could possibly have a wide enough temp. gradient in a 60 gallon to make it work.

Another issue that comes to mind is how generally messy frogs are. Having to clean a tank more often than would otherwise be necessary can be a considerable stressor to anoles.
