Why is my baby tegu hybirnating?? i thought babies didnt do tyhat

I have the lights on a timer so they go on at 6 am to 9 pm..but he is never out..i know hes still alive because yesterday i moved his log and he was under the bark underneath the log..and he popped his head out and puffed at me.Hes not sick or anything is he?

- Tegus don't sit out all day, I know this from experience as well as friends telling me the same thing. They may come out to hunt or look around but they do spend alot of time under the substrate.

-I'd puff at you to! I doubt he's sick because he's sleeping, but you never know. I don't want to say he's not when he could be, but it sounds normal to me.

Tegus hibernate at all sizes and ages. Where they come from it's a weather-related thing. I once had a baby Arg b&w hibernate straight through, no eating or coming out, from late November to early May. No kidding. And that was with optimum cage temps.

They know what they're doing and it's best to let them do as they wish. Just keep fresh water available and avoid the urge to keep digging him up.
