Trip to Scottsdale, AZ

ksterry Jan 29, 2005 09:58 AM

I get to take a trip to Scottsdale, Arizona next weekend! This is potentially awesome ... to travel from a chuckless area (WV) to a place where there might be chucks out running around! Does anyone know if there are hiking places in that part of AZ where I might see some basking chucks at this time of the year? Or is this not even chuck country or are they hibernating? Thanks for any advice.

Hello,
It's still pretty cool here for chucks to be out. I have seen young chucks out in January but it was near 80 degrees. Hope for warm weather.

If your brave, you can comb the granite outcrops, looking for cracks that face south more than any other. Often chucks will hibernate in south facing cracks as well as other lizards.. Heres the warning, rattlers love these rocks and you must be absolutely careful you don't stick your hand in a crack with a rattler o
rf if it's warm climb up in a ledge where one is suning. The other issue, is getting them out once you find them, if you find them...........

Yes there are chucks in the Scottsdale area. However if it don't warm up to 80 or so you might not have much luck. The hills and mountains around Scottsdale have more and more people population. South mountain park south of Phoenix I know is excellent for Chucks. Its only a few minutes drive from Scottsdale! Good luck. Bill.
