Feeding Anacondas Larger Prey

ben_renick Jan 29, 2005 10:42 AM

I have switched my anaconda over to rabbits, small 1/4 lbs rabbits, which aren't a whole lot bigger than a jumbo rat. I was just wondering if I should feed her every week (was being fed every 6-7 days in my feeding routine) or every other week. She isn't getting to be obese or anything and she always does deficate every week before I feed her again (just to know that she has digested her last meal). The rabbits don't even put a huge buldge in her. As long as I'm sticking to 1/4 lbs for awhile, should I be feeding every week or every other week? Any info shall be taken into heavy consideration The picture in this was taken the night after she was fed the first rabbit.

Well I dont have any experience with Greens but a good rule of thumb for any snake is dont feed it any thing bigger than the widest part of its body. However... I have found with my other snakes that a little bigger than that is usually not a problem.
Just something to think about.

Oh I know that, but it was nearly impossible to find jumbo rats, and large rats were just flying through the conda, you couldn't really even tell that she was eating them, so I figured I would just try 1/4 lbs rabbits, because they aren't much bigger than jumbos. I don't want to end up over feeding her, I mean she is pretty big, my pictures don't really show how big she is in person very good. I'm just wondering if I should feed her every week or every other week though.

It's hard to tell how long your anaconda is (however beautiful it is) but my female boa constrictor is 6 1/2 feet and eat's 1 lb rabbits (about the size of her girth) and she is not overweight, still growing. In young snakes your principle of feed then crap, then feed then crap is a good one. I think it would be hard to make a young 'conda obese, but that's just my opinion extrapolated from other snakes and animals. If you're worried, maybe split the difference and feed every 10 days.

On average, I typically feed a 1 to 2 year old female green (6 to 9 feet), a meal equal to between 10% and 15% of their body weight every 2 weeks. Once the female hits about 10 feet, I drop the feeder weight down to no more than 10% of her body weight every 2 to 3 weeks. As the females get older and larger, the feeding interval needs to be extended to every 3 weeks. Males will be on a lighter feeding schedule and breeding females will be on a heavier schedule. These are just general guidelines and will need to be adjusted for each snake as individual anacondas will gain and lose weight at different rates. As such, body weight of anacondas needs to be watched closely as even yearling greens can be overfed and become too heavy.
