If he has a runny nose, watery eyes, or seems to be sneezing something up, wheezing when he breathes, or other respiratory signs, be very concerned.

If he's just sneezing a lot, particularly when he digs, and you have him on pine, don't worry.

You may not be very happy with newspaper in the long run but at least it will let you tell if the pine is causing the sneezing.

which is a chronic respiratory thing that makes them susceptible to alleregic reactions or sensitivitys to chemicals, dust and what not. Many rats can't tolerate the wood of shavings or the dust of many other beddings. If there is an air treatment, dust, aerosols ANYTHING near them some will kick in with pretty severe symptoms. Test drive other bedding and see. I have not had a rat in a long time that tolerated shavings and mine are all on pelleted low dust stuff.
