New Rough Green Snake

herpheart13 Jan 29, 2005 02:30 PM

I finally got my first Rough Green snake and I am sooo excited. I didn't have to order him online either. I was visting some friends elsewhere and we dropped by their pet shop to get soem food for their frogs and they had like 1,000 reptiles. One cage had a "Tree Snake" and some green tree frogs and some anoles and some other lizards in it. I immediatly recognized the snake as a rough green snake. I asked the guy about him and he said they get huge and end up eating lizards and mice. I thought that sounded dumb, since this guy was about full grown and he looked like he couldn't even fit his mouth barely around a pinky. So I bought him and he did surprisingly well on the air plane ride and at home I didn't have my cage completely prepared so he spent a couiple days in one of those plastic cageswith hardly anything in it. I noticed he started getting really bored and it has been kinda chilly so I moved him into his new cage last night. It is an old 15 gallon tank that used to be used by my WTFs before I upgraded them. Them bottom just has some moss. He has a ceramic water bowl and a small heating pad in the corner which he likes to sit on. I set up some branches, fake plants, and some other things in there, too. He also has a UVB light above him. He seems kinda freaked out right now so I've decided not to mess with him for a few days because when I touched him he kinda slashed around, but he didn't try to bite me or anything. I think he likes it, though. I ahve a couple of questions: How do I tell if he is a male or a female? Can anything else live with him like an anole or a green tree frog like at the petstore? What should I feed him besides crickets? Thanks for your help!!! I'll keep you all updated!!!

i believe they will eat silkworms and waxworms, though waxworms are fatty so you'll wanna use them only as an occasional treat. young lobster roaches may also be food.
i've never had one so i'm just passing on whati heard, don't nescesarily take it as fact, do lots of research, it's fun to learn about your new pet.
