Golden Gecko and UV

Newearth Jan 29, 2005 02:35 PM

I have a small colony of golden Geckos (Gekko ulikovskii), they seem very happy and healthy. I have only used ordinary lighting no UV and today I have been old that they need UV. I think that a small amount of UV will be beneficial I doubt if they really need it.
Can anyone tell me if they do need UV or not just to set my mind at rest.

Conventional wisdom is that since they are nocturnal, UV is not necessary for their health as they would be holed up somewhere during most of the day. I think most keepers would agree that supplying UV couldn't hurt, and might indeed be beneficial, but I wouldn't go so far to say it's a requirement. I haven't used UV on any of my nocturnal geckos, and no problems so far in two years. Just make sure they are supplemented properly and you should be fine with ordinary lighting.

I put a UV on my goldens cage when I put live plants in the cage and they seem to be a lot more active during the day(eating, calling and overall just moving around and out a lot more) and it helps with keeping them intune with the 'seasons' and breeding. But like already said, its not absolutely needed for their health.
