Both work well, but most people indicate that the coco fiber (not coco panels) break down after a few years. My coco fiber background is a little over 2 years old now with no apparent trouble, but my substrate is drained very well.
Coco panels (compressed and stiff, not made of the "threads" of coco husks)are supposed to last quite some time, but are more expensive. Tree fern panels are considered to work quite well, but many suggest against using them, as it encourages deforestation of the rainforest.

Thanks for the info. Might i ask what type substrate and drainage system you have for your tank?
Sure, I use Coco Husk Chips mixed with horticultural grade charcoal. Some pet stores carry the coco husk chips under a particular brand name (T-Rex maybe?), and the activated charcoal chips can be found at Lowe's or Home Depot in the orchid area.
I use that on top of a false bottom. You can check out how I put it together at http://www.frognet.org/gallery/False-Bottom-and-Waterfall-Assembly . If you use the coco fiber background, what you have to be careful of is how much of your background is covered by the substrate, as the background will wick up moisture from the substrate by capillary action. That is good for plants growing there, but apparently causes acceleration of the breakdown of the background. All the best.
