Watering system for uroplatus

insular_exotics Jan 29, 2005 08:27 PM

Hi all!
I was wondering if anyone had tried placing a bowl of water with an airstone connected to a small aquarium air pump in their uros' enclosure as a water source. We used to use this trick all of the time with chameleons (they usually won't drink from a water bowl either) with great success when I was in the pet trade. It would have the added bonus of elevating humdity as well.

On an unrelated note, Kingsnake has started a mantella forum if anyone is into them!
Later!

I do this in my lineatus enclosure but with no pump,I have a small plastic tub that takes up about a quarter of the tub burried in the ground so its level with the substrate.I fill the tub with clay rounded balls, then fill it with water and cover the top with moss,I do this just to help raise the humidity and it works great.

well i didnt do exactly that, but what i tried was this:

took a 2-liter bottle filled most of the way with water, cut 2 holes in the cap (one for tubing to go in, one for out). the one going in came from the air pump and lead to a stone bubbler inside, which produced the humid air, and then the other tube going out didnt reach to the water, so all it pumped out was the humid air. unfortunately, i didnt think it worked well enough to keep it going in my 30 gal i was trying it on. might have been too large of a tank, might have been something else....

This method works really well but it costs a little more $$ (although significantly less than a pro misting system). Get a $30 fogger (try ebay) and put it in a small "critter keeper" with the appropriate amount of water. Put the fogger on an inexpensive timer and voila! you have a kickass watering system.
I've used this with chams with great success.

Good luck.
