Frozen Puree?

jbachi Jan 29, 2005 09:18 PM

I was considering mixing up a batch of crested gecko diet and fruits and possibly some baby food in a blender, then freezing it in ice cube trays and thawing as needed. I was just wondering if anyone had tried this and how it worked out. Also what kind of mashed up fruits different rhacs might prefer. Just throwing it out there,
thanks,
Jason

I'm sure the frozen fruit idea would work. But Ild suggest it more for a treat than a diet. Here is why. I decided I wanted to raise and breed cresties .. I went the fruit/babyfood/ Crested gecko diet/and occasional crickets route.

As do most new owners it didnt seem they ate the crested gecko diet fast enough for my liking ..so I gave more and more babyfood and or fruit in the mix. 10 months later my cresteds were all doing well and appear healthy .Adult females were laying healty and fertle eggs ..ect.BUT all of my juvies were small for thier age.

I have since began mixing just the diet per directions. And it turns out they eat it just fine ..they all began a growth spurt ..Simply put I think the more you dilute the crested gecko diet with babyfood the more you miss out on essential ingrediants they need for proper growth. Crickets on the other hand speed growth even faster probally due to the additional protien .

I dont want to start the crested gecko diet debate again..suffice it to say its better than babyfood.

As the previous poster mentioned: *Mix CGD as instructed on the container. Otherwise you are throwing off the nutritional balance of the mix, and in the long run, you're cheating your geckos out of a proper diet.*

Baby food is to Cresteds what Pixie sticks are to children - Simply not a healthy, daily diet.

Whatever you do, feed insects at LEAST once a week, I dont think CGD or any other all in one wonder diet cuts it, no matter how slick the marketing is. Fresh fruit by the way is not a bad thing (remember though, these animals are more insectivore than frugivore in the wild), mango, papaya, peach, nectarine, apple, and a whole host of other fruits work fine, berrys of all kinds are a particular favorite.

I freeze my crested's food in ice cube trays; however, I do not feed CGD. I mix fruit and meat baby food (with the 'recipe' listed in Robbie Hamper's book). It works well for me.

I too believe if you use CGD you are to follow the directions as adding other things (like babyfood) can alter the nutritional makeup, etc.
