Argus monitor or Blackt hroat

Skateboarder001 Jan 30, 2005 10:15 AM

Hey I was wondering which one of these monitors would be a better choice.Which one has the better temper out of the two.How big do the argus get, and do they tame down as they get use to you.Where can I get a CB argus hatchling I dont want anything wild caught.Pro exotics has some nice looking black throats but im kinda leaning more towards an argus monitor and I dont think they sell them.

Why not get a flavi-argus cross, instead of 5ft or so, they only grow to 3.5-4ft or so are prettier color and on average have a better attitude. All monitors are individuals, so attitude to species isnt a real good wa to pic unless its something like a nile, etc. Both are bottomless pits when it comes to eating (BT and argus). BTs can grow from 5-7ft or more and are extremely powerful animals, argus are a bit faster running, more skittish. Im pretty sure the BTs that Pro exotics have now are imports (going by price), but they are excellent quality animals. Flavi-argus are guarenteed CBB.

Thanks for the reply.I was gunna ask about the ARGUS X FLAVI crosses in the post but I forgot.I saw some for sale in the monitor classifieds and I wondered why the were so cheap $125 plus shipping. Are the ARGUS X FLAVI crosses usually cheaper than a regular argus? Have you seen the ones for sale in the classifieds? I thought the looked pretty skinny to me for CB babys, And I count tell the difference they looked like argus monitors to me.Are those true ARGUS X FLAVI crosses or do you think those are WC baby arguses.Would I set up the enclosure for one of the ARGUS X FLAVIs the same way I would setup a argus enclosure.

I know Flavi-argus crosses sold for $1400 a few years ago each. I dont know how many argus imports are sold, but Flavi-argus crosses are not WC. Id say keep them the same, most monitors have the same basic husbandry. Flavi crosses dont get as big nor are they as skittish or jumpy.

The "farm raised" BTs they sell are imports, why do you think they show up the same time every year? Can you say WC. When Pro Exotics sold a CBB BT a few years ago they were sold for $225-$250 plus each, the imports are $165-$185 plus, ask Robyn yourself, if he sells you a CBB monitor he will also tell you how old it is, who bred it, etc. Pro Exotics produced CBB BTs in 2002, since then I havent heard anything about any more being hatched. If someone sold you a BT that they say is CBB for $125, they sold you an import they bought really cheap and wanted to sell fast, not many BT or WTs in this country in the last years that are CBB. Pro Exotics had at one time Faust crosses, I havent heard of any available there since.
By the way argus grow to 3.5-5ft depends on sex (males are much much larger). BTs can grow 5-7ft plus (again depends on sex). Argus are a medium size monitor, BTs are a large species. There are many many differences between the 2 species, too many to list. Argus are on average less expensive CBB, as they have been bred alot longer in captivity, as well a whole heck of alot more often, very regularly actually. About the only species that sells for less than $185 each CBB (argus) are yellow ackies, most are $300-$1000 plus.

Flavis are a subspecies of goulds, and argus are a different species, they come from different places, different environments. Flavis are sand monitors, argus are floodplain monitors with some being Aussie and many being from New Guinea, they only cross in captivity. Argus- V panoptes, flavi- V gouldi flavirufus (last reclassification I checked). Of course with many of these animals for sale that resemble each other so much they may be argus, sold as crosses, who knows, I never looked at the pics.

Has anyone saw the argus X flarvi crosses in the monitor classifieds.I have decided to go with a cross. The price for the crosses in the classifieds are $125 and I thought that was cheap considering that CBB arguses are usually $200 to $250.Shount the crosses be more has anyone seen the pictures that im talking about.Could someone who knows the difference between a regular argus and a cross check out the pics and let me know if they are true crosses. They look to me to be argus monitors but I could be wrong.Does anyone know where I can get a Baby argus X flarvi cross online from a good dealer or breeder.

Price is determined by quality and quantity for the most part.
If there are many price will be lower, if there are few price will be higher. If it is in good health and has exceptional color or pattern then price is higher then average looking animals.

There is no set price or blue book to go by, price is whatever the seller wants it to be or whatever someone will buy it for.

The best thing for you would be to locate a good reputable seller and look over the animal offered. If it is what your looking for and fits your price then go for it. But to get a high quality above average looking animal expect to pay a little more, to get an average looking animal expect to pay less. Being a cross means just that it could look more argus or more flavi. It could be a direct argus cross flavi breeding, it could be a argus flavi cross bred to an argus, or a flavi bred to an argus cross flavi, or a cross bred to a cross. Prices will probly reflect which way it has been crossed and so will the looks of the animal.

Good luck

arguses are hyperactive, high strung, jumpie, fearless little monitors that put on a big threat display, they are very food agressive, males get up to 5 feet( females 3.5-4 feet), they are very smart lizards, and my personal favorite monitor. the crosses com in a wide range of colors, and are all the fun of keeping an argus, but thier a little calmer( not as calm as a flavi but not quite an argus), because thier a cross spieces they can get from flavi size 3ft, to nearly argus size 4.5ft, both kinds would reqiure about a 6ftx3ftx4ft cage, but i sugest a 8ftx4ftx4ft cage, also if you get they argus when you feed it WATCH YOUR FINGERS.
