some questions about frogs

froghog Jan 30, 2005 03:43 PM

so while i've been working on my tank i've been tormenting myself over what kind of frogs to get... mostly because i will be starting off with two (i am starting up a second tank just in case they turn out to be the same sex)... i have narrowed my choices down to either azureus or some form of tinctorius... i really like the new rivers but i was wondering what the difference between new rivers and blue sipiliwanis is... i also have been looking into the inferalanis morph but the only place i can find any has them inbred... what do you guys think would be the best choice and why... also where would be the best places to find the tinctorius morphs i mentioned... thanks so much by the way for welcoming me into this forum so kindly... i mostly posted in the rhac forum before this and it's good to see there are other forums that are just as nice as the folks over there... thanks again!-paul

Paul,

Most captive bred frogs will have been "inbred" to a certain extent, and show no problems. Azureus, for one, have not legally been brought into the country since the 80's, so almost all the current froglets are "inbred."

As far as picking your darts and where you purchase from, I would recommend buying from a breeder that is near you. If you could let us know your general location, I'm sure people around here would be able to point you in the right direction as to local breeders.

If you cannot purchase firsthand, Patrick at Saurian has a great reputation, as does Sean Stewart www.herpetologic.net. I have purchased almost all of my frogs from Quality Captives (www.qualitycaptives.com), but they do not ship during these cold months.

As for the diferences between New Rivers and Blue Sips, their location is the primary difference, and you can check out http://www.fantasticfrogs.com/suriname.html to see some different descriptions. I have the New Rivers, and like them quite a bit . . . they are about 33-50% bigger than the azureus, and a different shade of blue (some are almost a white/blue, while others are a darker blue). With tincs, I say just get what you like, as the care is similar for all.

thanks for the prompt response... i am located in new york (travelling back and forth between poughkeepsie and the city)... i am most likely going to wait until march or april to get the frogs since i want the tank to run for a bit and there is a show in white plains in april anyway... but just in case i get antsy i'd be more than willing for you to shout out a couple breeders near here if you know of any... i have been looking at aaron's frog farm as a place i could get my frogs from but if i get them shipped i have also looked at sarian.net and herpetoligic.net... as far as azureus and tincts go... which would you recommend over the other? thanks so much-paul

I know I'll get hated on for this, but I don't like the square backs of the tincs.. looks weird. They're like bulldogs

From what I've read, the red glactonotus are more shy than the orange splash backs, and more expensive, if that is a consideration. My own pumpkin orange galacs are incredible characters, and most satisfactory. They turned out to be all females, so I don't know anything first hand about their breeding activities. They are simply bright, entertaining frogs, and since I don't intend to be a breeder, it doesn't matter to me.
