go to home depot and buy new bag of mulch for 3 bucks, it would be too much of a pain to do that for something that is so readily available and cheap.
good luck

$50 wow

Why not use newspaper for the pythons and dirt for the monitors? It is basically free.

Hey DrzRider, Is dirt from outside good? Or does it need to be cleaned(i dunno how you clean dirt.. LOL).. I have my sav monitor on woodchips and I don't like it one bit but I can't get my hands on anything right now because it's all $75.. I tried to get what you're using and it was $150 in all, just for 2 bags.. I was like holy crap! no way!

$150 !!!!!!!!!! WOW
That is not the same stuff I use then. I get the really cheap dirt and sand. The bag does not say mulch or cypress or anything like that.

I would use yard dirt as long as it is not mostly clay. I would get the large chunks of sticks, bark, leaves, or what ever out of it and then dump it into the cage. I have heard of people putting the dirt into an oven and cooking it at 350 degrees to kill any parasites or bugs. Personally, I think that is overkill.

Is there no Lowes, Home Depot, Ace Hardware, or anything like that around where you live? If there is ask them for plain topsoil and play sand. If not I would try your yard dirt.

I went to LOWES and HOME DEPOT, same thing.. I was like there's no way in hades that can be right! they were like sorry, afraid so.. It's these alabama hicks, i can't say much because i've been here for 10 years, lol. If you're goin down the highway they charged $300 to toe your car half a mile, horrible.

hmm.. it just rained.. would now be the best time to go get some? So you're saying I shouldn't put it in the oven/grill to kill any parasites or anything? I want to have the best for him but it's either way too expensive or I don't know how to properly sanitize it.. lol.. such a pickle..

Some of the other posters here say that as long as the monitor is healthy there is no need to steralize the dirt. The micro organisms in the dirt help to break down the fecal matter. The cage still needs to be spot cleaned everytime the sav. goes to the bathroom though.

There are some previouse posts on the forum that show different keepers opinions on the subject.

Good Luck,

Well, I didn't make it to wal-mart. My car broke down right in the driveway and I had to stay home. It's getting fixed tomorrow morning so i'll get it tomorrow.
