Picture of a nearly wild aquaflame FEMALE collared

johne Jul 06, 2003 08:09 AM

Although she is in my background, she has reverted back to the "catch me if you can" way of living. I was lucky to even get a picture. I did actually catch her last night, but it was in an attempt to catch Sammie, a different female aquaflame. I did manage to find Sammie under a rock, but she quickly made the get away.

Eve had mentioned that is must not be very exciting keeping the lizards outside in a pen, when I get to rarly see them, or they run and hide. I find that the exciting part. I think it tends to get somewhat boring when they sit in the same place every day, and don't make a move. I love when I do get to to see them. They seem to exhibit behaviours outside that I would never get the chance to see inside. I really can appreciate their burrowing, running, hiding, and agressiveness. Chili is an exception to this. When I get inside the pen, he will just sit there...I can pick him up, or give him a few mealworms and he is OK with this.

What do you have on top of the cage for protection, thet lets in the sunlight like that? Or do you HAVE a top for it?

the dimensions of the cage are adequate to keep the lizards in with no top at all...per suggestions of several people, and losing one of my finest lizards last year, I put this on...Just designed to keep birds and other pests out.

Nice garden. Any carrots? You should put a fountain in there. They would probably like it. No seriosly, thats a big cage. I like it. (But I'd still probably rather have one of those inside, with greenhouse walls, plexiglas roof and stuff. That would be cool.) How high is it? 2 feet? They can't jump it even without the screen cover, eh? Thats cool.

Total walls are 48" tall, with about 16" in the ground. An inside greenhouse would be nice, but would probably be more humid than necessary...would be perfect for a mountainous chameleon. I keep the plants trimmed down on the inside, so the lizards cannot use it for spring boards...total dimensions are approx. 8 X 9' sides.

...are the very high temps and humidity and the fact that most available roof materials will filter out the UVB. What I would like to do is build my house around a central open courtyard or atrium, in the manner of the ancient Romans, and fill that up with lizards. But unless I scratch off the *right* lotto ticket, I will probably use Johne's Barbarian Hot Tub Technology, and just learn the Latin translation for "I never see my lizards" LOL.

all those people on the field herping forum that never collect. They don't get too upset when they go out into the field and don't find anything (Ok...some do). It's all about the hunt! I have to approach the pen with such carefulness...camera cocked and loaded...you get the picture (no pun intended).

Two of the lizards are very tame...Chili, and the yarrow spiny lizard. They will both eat mealworms from my fingers. I'm trying to break them of this terrible unnatural reaction. Now, when they take a mealworm from my fingers, I slap them in the head. Just kidding.

This is Gus Rentfro's cage "how-to" guide. I found it very helpful when constructing my own pen.

...and I was just funning' ya, I'd really rather have my lizards in sort of a 'mini-preserve' type enclosure; I could always use my old 60X spotting scope to get a look at them if they got bashful about being approached too closely. My problems here are finding some level land to build it on (ever seen the Virginia Highlands? LOL) and of course the climate (I saw frost on the wife's windshield back on June 2nd!). Our summer here lasts about 45 minutes (or so it seems to a former Texan) and if this year is any guide, I would have to incorporate some design features to make sure the lizards wouldn't drown! Maybe I'll just switch to raising harp seals LOL.

I've also been pondering the idea of a webcam...LOL. Maybe even a deerstand within 25 yards, and I could get a picture! If you've seen the whole design of things, I have to approach the pen from above, so they don't see me until they realize something big is coming (that's right...I said big, Eve).

The drainage can be worked out...simply fill the entire perimeter with pea gravel about 10' deep.

skyliner Jul 07, 2003 01:10 PM

there is awhole host of models out there to choose from,i've got a black and white 1 just now but you can get color as well. Also the camera's plug into the back of your tv via the scart socket so need for monitors (of the screen type not varanid type)And you can also get 1's with sound and multiple camera's on 1 setup. The camera's themselves are tiny so placing them is easy, heck i had mine in the collareds 4x2x2 and you couldn't tell!
I will try to post pics of mine later

I have a clear perimeter all the way around the inside in which I step into first...the lizards only retreat under a few different rocks. I know which ones those are, and never move them unless I really need too. I don't get in there too often...mainly, I lean over the edge to put some salad in for the chuckwalla (supplemental greens), and I hand feed the two lizards I mentioned earlier.
