Wattage?

Rydair Jan 30, 2005 05:59 PM

Does the Wattage of a bulb effect how much heat is produced? My Savy's tanks is to hot so I was planning on changing the Wattage of one of my lights from 100 to 45, would this effect the heat?

i think so bc when i buit my rough neck cage i put in 100 wats it got like 65 then i put in a 150 with a 250 plant bulb it went up to 80. then i just bough 2 cermic heat bulbs at lll shiped, and it is now up to 90-95 with basking about 100

so i think smaller wated bulb dont ghive off that much heat, like try a 75 see if that helps, bc a 45 wat migh drop the temp alot.

hope this helps
ps ur daughter is lucky haveing all those animals i her room, im lucky my mom lets snakes in the house but she love the new 3 by 3 by 6 cage in our living room with my rough neck in it she thinks it bring out the color or the room bc of all the plants and vine in it.

Because all of that lighting is badly overkill. If you have the animal close enough to the bulbs and the cage isn't overventilated, there is no reason a couple of 90 watt or even 45 watt halogens couldn't get the job done better (I would assume 90 by your description of the temps). That setup you have now must really kill the electric bill.

Both the wattage and the distance effect heat. The wattage will effect the overall heat output, this will change both the basking and ambient temperatures. When using a lower wattage bulb the ambients will be greatly decreased. In order for it to still allow a high basking temperature you may need to place it closer to the basking area. Only flood bulbs should be used, you may use outdoor halogens or indoor incandescents. Some people use more then 1 bulb giving a bank of lights enlarging the basking surface.

Reptile bulbs are jusnk and cannot be compared to normal household flood bulbs, etc. A 45 watt halogen outdoor flood bulb can heat a solid top 4x2x2ft or even 6x2x3ft cage in a 68f or above room temp. The bigger the monitor, the more lightbulbs are needed to properly, and evenly heat the animals entire STV legth, as well to heat much larger cages. I use anywhere from 1-4 bulbs in a light assembly depends on the animals size. At 12-14 inches away from plywood a 45 watt halogen outdoor bulb will produce a 135-154f basking spot with about 83-86f ambient temps around the basking area, and a great temp gradient to room temps as you move away from the basking spot. High watt bulbs have a nasty habit of drying out cages, drying out animals in them, of course with a solid top that problem goes away. My ackies ahve a 195f basking spot from 6-8 inches from a 45 watt halogen outdoor flood bulb.
Some pics with 45 watt bulbs...
