how can I stop the odor??

aussie01 Jan 30, 2005 10:09 PM

I have a medium size res in a 30gal tank(approx 1/2 full) with a Fluval304 filter. I can't seem to stop the room the tank is in from smelling, which then spreads through a lot of the house. Is there any additives that work that I can use to help combat the smell. Do those "ionic breeze" things work, maybe I should put one of them in the room.

Do 1/3 water changes once a week. Once you tank properly cycles and you continue with these partial water changes the smell should be under control. Also -- yes those Ionic Breeze things work wonders for removal of odors so that is another option to assist in odor reduction in the room. You still should maintain the partial water changes though.

The best ways to minimize odor is to be really good about cleaning.

Partial water changes at least once a week are a must. Never change all the water.

Also, make sur your filter media is clean and add some fresh carbon, Carbon takes odor and color out of the water.

It is important to identify where the smell is coming from. Does it come from the water? Or from the filter?

If you have rocks or other kind of decoration on the bottom of the tank you might want to consider getting rid of it as it can trap debris and lead to a smelly tank.
