mike d Jul 06, 2003 09:06 AM

well i jhave been thinking about getting an iguana and i checked at my local "pet shops" and there iguanas look terrible(skinny, and they jus dont look right).

so after reading some articles on how many iguanas are given up and put up for adoption i want to adopt one and give one who needs a home a home to live in.... but here is my problem.. there are no places in my area to adopt iggs(all they do are dogs and cats). so would have to talk to the people over the internet. and go by what they say.. is that good? or should i try and look around at some other "pet shops"? have any of you ever adopted? and how hard is it to adopt an igg?

i really want to adopt an igg!!!

Actually, there are more iguanas that need homes that there are new owners looking. Where are you? Almost all rescues ask you to complete an application and state what knowledge you have.

A good place is www.greenigsociety.org

GOOD FOR YOU!!! www.greenigsociety.com/rescue.htm and read through their policies and procedures. some owners require you to fill out an application and te owner and the society review your application. BUT find one close to you. It is VERY hard to ship and iguana. And most places DO NOT ship them. So you will prolly have to drive to pick it up. If this isnt the wya you want to go place an ad in the newspaper saying you wish to adopt an unwanted iguana. Check your shelters!! most cat and dog shelters DO take in other animals but dont keep them for long. So go in and leave your name and phone number and have them give u a call if one comes up Good luck!!!

Let us know where you are located! We'll help hook you up. I have 24 iguanas in the rescue right now and know rescues throughout the country that are in the same situation.

Mike, check out the lists and resources at my Herp Societies & Rescues page. Reptile rescues are rarely listed in the phone book like the SPCA and HS shelters are - they just don't have the same kind of funding.

Also linked to my Society/Rescue page is a Cyber Adoption Sites page, listing several small organizations specializing strictly in iguana or reptile rescue.

Because most reptile/iguana rescues are very careful about who they adopt out to, expect to be quizzed on both your knowledge of iguanas, what your expectations are about dealing with an iguana, housing one now and in the future, ability to secure veterinary care, etc. You'll find lots of information on all of this--and more--at my Anapsid.org site, so you might want to browse around in there for awhile, too.
