Humidifier

ConradCA Jan 31, 2005 12:28 PM

Hi

My wifes veiled is pretty old and appears to have difficulty keeping hydrated. We have been considering getting a fogger to help him out. The problem is that the reptile foggers are not very reliable and very expensive. I decided to check out the cool humidifiers at the local drug store and found that they are a lot cheaper. There appear to be 2 different types, one uses a special disk and works like the reptile foggers, the other type use a disk that gets wet and has air blown on it. Anybody try one of these to hydrate a chameleon ?

I take this guy into the shower in the morning and use an eye dropper on him in the evening.

Hi Conrad - how is the rescue doing? He is certainly in fine and caring hands

As for the humidity issue with your other cham...I live in NH where it is extremely dry from November thru April/May so it is a daily concern. I, and others, have opted for a humidifier with PVC pipe attached to guide it right into the cage. I then use some plexi-glass pieces as baffles just to keep the moisture from getting into/onto/under light fixtures. I prefer it to a fogger/mister (not that I have tried them), but from others keeper's experiences. I like this method and the control it allows. The only real concern, if it even is a concern, is that it is cool mist. What I do to balance, is to bring her cage up to a high basking temp of 95+, then turn it on. Luna will literally climb onto a specific branch to be in the mist - damn I just love her

I use the Sunbeam which can be found here: http://www.sunbeamhealth.com/productdetail.asp?id=52 and I spent about $5 at home depot getting the pvc I needed. Here is a pic of the setup. You can go to the gallery and look under "lele" for more if you want.

hope this helps! Oh, regardless of what you use, clean it often (though I am sure you know that). I take the PVC out whenever it is not in use and then clean the tank daily - but I tend to be obsessive ;-/

hi lele, wondering which sunbeam model you use thanks matt

lele Feb 01, 2005 08:43 AM

it is model 699 and I got it at K-mart. I also use the small one 697-6 for inside her cage once in a while if I want the entire cage nice and steamy.

Hi,

I have a similar setup to Lele. I use a 'Sunpentown' Humidifier. I like it because it has boil dry protection and an alarm when it runs dry. I had a previous humidifier that died because I ran it dry.

$40 online at Priceground.com. I had good a customer experience with them too.

Another option to piping the fog down from an open fitting through the cage top (and near the light bulbs) is something I tried.

I ran a piece of pvc through a hole in the screen (you can stitch it closed again in future if necessary) horizontally across the cage below and slightly out of direct line of the lights. The pipe had holes drilled every few inches so the fog poured down in streams all across the cage. The drill holes need to be fairly large to keep the fog from condensing too much inside the pvc, and there needed to be a slight downward slope to it. Also, I made them increasingly closer together the farther from the humidifier they were. This equalized the fog density a bit.
