Tracking Software???

toshamc Jan 31, 2005 01:01 PM

I was wondering if anyone used any tracking software for their snakes. When it was just two that were on the same schedule, it was no problem, but now that my collection is growing I need something other than 2 x4 index cards (LOL). I found one program called Pet Tracks that lets you customize everything you want to track and you can include a picture of the animal, it seemed neat, and useful, but I wanted to get some feedback from the experts!

I just custom built an Access Database for all my snake records. It manages a ton of stuff. Animal ID....how I aquired the animal....who I sold it to....$ transactions....photos of each animal....breeding history...etc.

I pretty much have it complete....but I'm sure I will continue to bolt stuff on as I think of it. I was thinking the other day....that maybe I should market it.

Not exactly sure what you are after. I assume you are looking for a program that stores any and all information on each ball python you have. From feeding to temperment, to housing, to eating, to breeding, to pairs, to preferences, toi background, and alot more.

Although I have no personally used this, I have previewed it and it seems like a very complete program. With a ton of information. I guess I just like the index cards.

Here's the link;

Are you using this software?

It seems to be a free download....is that true?

If you are using it...how do you like it?

On the surface it looks pretty good.

I said in the previous post that I have previewed it. The preview is free. You actually download the trial and everything works on it, but it will not save all the information until you contact the manufacturer to get the key to unlock it. So once you close the program, all entries are lost. IMO, it is the most complete program out there for those that do everything on the PC with regard to their snakes. Download it and give it a try. It's a nice one.

I am assuming this is in US dollars. I emailed them a long time ago and this is what they sent me:

Hi Jeff,
Thank you for your interest in SnakeKeeper For Windows.

We have the following options available for you:

1. R99.00 – This only includes a license for the SnakeKeeper For Windows program

2. R149.00 – This includes a License Key a SnakeKeeper For Windows installation CD

3. R299.00 – This inlcudes a License Key, a SnakeKeeper For Windows installation CD and a one year subscription to the Ultimate Exotics magazine.

Hope this helps, and like I said, if you preview it, you will see that it is unbelievably complete.

I think that is the name of the magazine from there. It is probably offered in Rand - they usually use the "R" like that. But I don't know the exchange rate. I am sure you can find it on the Internet.

5StarrMorphs Jan 31, 2005 11:41 PM

I guess had I of read the rest of my email, I would have seen that it was in fact in South African Rand quotes. Duh...

I got the conversion and it equates to:

1. R99.00 – This only includes a license for the SnakeKeeper For Windows program - Converted to $14.00 US

2. R149.00 – This includes a License Key a SnakeKeeper For Windows installation CD - Converted to $25.00 US

3. R299.00 – This inlcudes a License Key, a SnakeKeeper For Windows installation CD and a one year subscription to the Ultimate Exotics magazine. - Converted to $50.00 US

So, not a bad price if you download the free trial version and then pay the $14 bucks for the key to activate it.

Sometimes I think I get a little too much pleasure out of the hassle PC users go through while my Macs just hum along. It's like living in a different world sometimes!

Gotta love em!!!
If the software comes out, we will eventually have it!
With the money I have invested in my G4, I could have purchased a G5; However, this thing flys with a Sonnet CPU upgrade, DVR-106 super drive, Nvidia 128mb ti video card, all the latest and greatest software, and tons of great ball python pics to view on my 22" display.
Sorry, I am a Mac freak, but trust me.
You wouldn't know it if you saw my office full of ball pythons and vintage skateboards.

RinL Feb 01, 2005 07:10 AM

it is a good program. free trial download. $20 to purchase if you like it. at the bottom of the page it says "Mac OSX w/Virtual PC has been reported to work. No guarantees". so you mac users might want to look at this.Rin

nerd_inc Feb 01, 2005 07:20 AM

The Degei software is great - easily my favorite to date. I haven't had any issues specifically related to this software using in in VPC.

But Virtual PC itself can have problems just like a real PC. And that's a pain in the butt.

Maybe we can tempt Damon into writing a Mac version for the rest of us.

It is a great program. Keeps track of almost everything, everything I can think of anyways.

Its language is Visual Basic and you can pretty much code for anything you want. If you want it simplistic, you can just use the macro functions, or even just a table in spreadsheet format.

Heck, even just a spreadsheet program, with each file being the individual animal would keep everything neat and tidy. I wouldn't by a herp-specific program when you can construct one yourself and make it CUSTOM-made for your needs and wants.

Although, ANY program helps if you have 100-plus animals. They really do cut down the time and energy into keeping records. I think they are a very valuable tool.

Good luck!
