Some foothill hiking..

jeph Jan 31, 2005 01:38 PM

Hi,
On saturday i went on a little hike behind my dads house in Sab Bernardino-(very close to waterman canyon). The tempos were nice, probably around 70 with clouds moving in and out through the day-(it had rained really good firday night), but heres a picture of a little pond that has formed at the base of the foothills-(there were quite a few of these around, but they'll be gone quick),I'll post pics of the herps seens too.

Hi,
This is actually what I went out hoping to see. Last March I saw one down the street in a wash, the first one I've seen, and with the rain from the night before I thought it would be a good chance to see one, and I ended up seeing 2 of them. this was the first one. I'm not sure if these are ssp. that are called the Black belly slender-(which is protected I think). In the San Bernardino mtns I find another type of salamander all over the place, you can pretty much lift any water meter top and find them, or if you have firewood stacks in your yarc then you'll find them forsure.Anyways, enjoy the pic, I know its not that good, but I couldnt get a good pic of these guys.

Hi,
This one was cool to find. I was looking through some small rocks around a nice grantie outcropping, and found this one, it was bigger than the first one, and this oen had small amounts of red on its tail-(which was almost twicne the length of its body,a very cool looking salamander), if you know what ssp. this is,let me know..?,thanks for looking and enjoy the pic,

Hi,
I was glad to see as much as i did for Jan.29th, it was still pretty wet out, hopefully it will stay sunny all week and temps will rise and I can get out a little bit and see more. I kept thinking I'd see a southern pacific-(theres quite a few around there) but no show,oh well. Thanks for looking,

Nice post. I'm in San Diego (where slender salamanders are everywhere) and I'm not sure, but that looks like (B.p.major) the garden slender salamander. I understand that new ssp are being described for the slender salamander and I don't have much info on them yet. Keep up the SoCal posts.

Cool pictures, yeah Nathan is right, those are Garden Slender Salamanders (Batrachoseps major).
