FOOD FOR HATCHINGS

Mad_1234 Jan 31, 2005 07:48 PM

What does everybody feed their hatchlings? I have some pietschmanni eggs that are hopefully going to hatch pretty soon and I want to know what to feed them. I have several fruit fly cultures going but I'm worried the fruit flies are too small. The are Drosophila melanogaster, the smaller fruit flies. I don't have a reliable cricket dealer near me so I'm kind of worried.
Thanks,
Matt

well theres always the option of having crickets shipped in, but i dont know how costly that is nor the health of the crickets, cuz you dont want crickets that will die a week after you get them. anyway, i fed D. melanogaster to my phantasticus hatchlings until they were large enough to take small crickets. as for pietschmanni, i would imagine the hatchlings would be around twice the size of phantasticus, so i dont know if melanogaster would be the best thing to use. there is drosophila hydei which actually get a lil bigger and have a much longer life span. still dont know if those would be big enough for your hatchlings to even grab. i would just find the closest pet store that sells small crickets and perhaps make trips out there, thats what i did once my phantasticus hatchlings were big enough to take them. if i remember right, you had 4 eggs, so buying crickets once or twice a week shouldnt be too bad as long as the drive isnt too far or you arent too busy for that. perhaps others can comment on cricket shippers....

I use www.reptilefood.com and they are great. For 1000 crickets, any size, its 10.00! Then overnight shipping is about $10. So for 1000 crickets any size its about $20! Or what I do is buy 1000 small and 1000 large for only $32 shipped overnight to my doorstep!! And they have never messed up my order and I have bought ALOT of crickets from them. I used to deal with worm-man but they would always forget my mealworms or wax-worms so I dont use them anymore but try out reptile food. They are great and also have many other feeders at GREAT prices! Erik

Is there a good over count in the boxes ? I have been using southerncricket for a long time now and they seem to give a descent overcount, which is why I like them, and their prices are also cheap.

i would try pinhead to one week old crickets. they mihgt wok the best for you. i would treat your babys just like the adults. sometimes if you have a established terrarium you get these little white bugs that grow in there and your babys eat them. this works really good with my satanics as a first food. try ordering off of the internet 1000 pinhead crickets (herpfood.com is what i use.)hope this helps and keep us posted on your corkbark hatchlings.

I've tried almost everyone over the years, and I dont like herpfood.com. Their crickets are often "dirty" and have a lot of shipping issues. My favorite is southerncricket.com - never had a shipping problem in the last 5 years, they have a great overcount, there are almost never any dead on arrival, and they are very, very clean. Comparable in price as well.
