Reptarium

burmaboy Jan 31, 2005 08:43 PM

I recently became an owner of a Prehensile Tail Skink.
With it, I received a larege Reptarium Cage.I am now looking for a cover for it. A clear, heavy plastic cover.I need this to keep heat, and especially humidity in.
I know these were made at one time, but I cant seem to find one now.
Anyone know where I might find one? Or have any ideas for sealing this cage with something other than screen?
There is really no sense in adding a heatlamp, as the heat will just pass through. And I am misting the cage, but any humidity is lost immediately.
Any ideas would be appreciated.
Thanks
Bob

not sure about that cover, but you might have to get a new cage. the last owner kept it in one of those screen vivariums?

Yeah...the owner did. I'm thinking of just taking sheets of plexi, and screwing them to the sides.
I need to do something soon. I'm worried about the health of the animal

Didn't know covers were made for these. My fiance made one for her orchid rack by buying some heaver, clear plastic from an Ace Hardware. Very easy to do.

Hey Chris...long time no see.
I recall this heavy material that fit over the cage. It was marketed as holding in heat and moisture. This was back a couple of years ago. Not too long.
You just kind of zipped it over the cage. Converted your Reptarium Cage to a snake cage.
I'll check the hardware store tomorrow. I should be able to come up with something.

You want the Reptarium Softray. I think you can still get them from www.herpsupplies.com, or possibly PetSmart.com [much more expensive than herpsupplies]. It's a heavy-duty clear plastic cut to fit the size of Reptarium and also cut to fit depending on whether you're using the Reptarium set up vertical or horizontal. You take the screen cover off and pull the Softray around the frame [use more than one to cover more than one side], then put the screen cover back on. I've been housing two Taiwan Beauties in a pair of the largest Reptariums [260 gallon], for over two years now and they've done great. I think they fail in holding in humidity, but I run a mister on them twice a day so it's not really an issue. Still, I'm going to be retiring those cages this year in favor of a better design. The unused Reptariums will instead be kept for temporary display purposes at shows or for temporary holding of new animals if necessary.
