Eggs Finally!

marksherps Jan 31, 2005 10:53 PM

This gorgeous female het calico from Xtreme reptiles is laying her first clutch tonight. She has had 25 so far and might be done, not sure yet. She was bred by a male sibling.

Her eggs average 4 inches in length, 2 and a half inches wide, and 262-268 grams!

Its been 3 years of hard work and dedication raising these up and I can't wait to see what we get!

why a male sibling? there are other het. calicos on the market.

I bred sibs together for the same reason anyone else would. To learn more about the genetics of this particular morph. Have you seen Xtreme's wild caught female that produced my hets? She has normal colored areas and white areas, thats it. Any recessive morph thats been reproduced from starting with a single specimen has been inbred, there's no way around it. Thanks!

Congrats Mark!!! Its about time we see some more of your awesome retics avalible again!

thewho Feb 01, 2005 05:30 PM

I realize this. I didn't realize that you were going after a specific calico animal. There are many calicos in captivity and many hets. Anyway, you can get the same result from breeding together half sibs. That limits the degree of inbreeding a bit.

Or you could just do it the way Mark is doing it

Well, you can do anything anyway you please. That doesn't always mean it's the best or safest way.

I think we compared notes every day since last August! It was a big help knowing our females were doing the same stuff! Now my second female had her post ovulation shed on the 8th and she was digging in the newspaper last night. I bet both our girls will lay this weekend, sweet!
