Anyone ever cross a Fat Tail and Leopard Gecko?

gemdreamer Feb 01, 2005 12:34 AM

I was just curious, some of the Fat Tails have great markings. Is it possible to cross breed and if so would they not be fertile? I mean with some cross breeding that happens.

If it is possible has anyone done it and what was the outcome?

Just curious, Thanks.

I'm against this 100%, for reasons that I won't go into here.

But I do beleive someone tried a while back and just got infertile eggs.

Why would someone want to? If they want a leo with great markings all they'd have to do is go out and get one.

Although I do have to admit, I'd like to do something of the sort with uromastyx.

I'd like to see what happens when you breed an Egyptian uro with an ornate uro (egyptians get about 3 feet in length, ornates get about a foot and a half but are blue or green in color).

This is an ornate:

This is an Egyptian uro:

-----
2 Mali Uromastyx-Ares & Apollo
2 Bearded Dragons- Draco & Hades
1 Saharan Uromastyx-Iris
1 Leopard Gecko-Kalypso
1 Tokay Gecko-Sid Vicious
1 Tarantula-Peter Parker
1 Amazon Red Head Parrot-Pancho
1 African Gray Parrot-Keya
1 Dog-Cheeka
3 Fish-no names
1 Beta Fish-also no name
1 Zebra Finch-Beeps

I will try crossbreeding the next season...

Why are you willing to risk the health and wellbeing of your animals to try something that common sense should tell you is wrong and if common sense fails you you have already been told in this very thread that what you want to do is both morally wrong and futile- unethical breeders have tried it in the past without any success.

But you do the same thing. You breed patternless with kinked tails. This is against ethical breeding practices. This is a negative trait that physically deforms the animal. This is morally and ethically wrong. I guess sometimes greed overpowers ethics.

First off, I have never owned a patternless leopard gecko. The closest thing was when I was selling a patternless albino breeding group for a friend of mine.

I have never knowingly inbred any leopard gecko in my collection. If I have worked on a specific project, such as the Blazing Blizzards, I have always utilized multiple bloodlines to produce some of the most genetically diverse leopard geckos on the market.

I resent you trying to turn this around and attack me using a completely baseless argument. I have been breeding for years and striving for health above anything else.

all ethics aside (though i happen to agree), they just are not closely related enough. hybridization between species is rare in general, and i can think of no incidents where it's successful when the two species concerned are in separate genuses. (i.e., leopard geckoes are 'eublepharius macularius,' and afts are something like 'hemisomethingyx somethingelse;' it would be like trying to breed a rabbit with a chinchilla.)

I was talking to Kelli from H.I.S.S in a chat room (sorry i can't say the chat room in here since its another forum) and i asked her if it has ever been done (this was about 2 weeks ago). She told me it has been done before and she has seen pictures of it, it was a male but unfortunatly it died before it could reach adult hood. She is writing a book and in it she said she will have a picture, and hopfully a section about it.
