What's Nightcrawlers?...I know, it's a stupid question...

CokeofMan Jul 06, 2003 10:47 AM

I've heard ppl talking about these as kind of a basic food, but I can't find out what they are, (Oh, BTW english isn't my first language and I searched the dictionary but found nothing, I s'pose it's maybe a nickname...I dunno) some sort of cricets or other bugs? Sorry about this stupid question, but it would be really nice if anyone could show me a pic or the latin name.

Thanks in advance

Nightcrawlers are just big earth worms.

Yes, they are very large earthworms...you can buy them at bait shop for fishing. They're not very expensive. Most smaller can't eat them because they are too large, but a pac-man or a pyxie can.

i was reluctant to say they can use the ones at bait shops. So they use no chemicals on those worms or any thing? there perfectly safe?

bait shop worms are raised under rabbit hutches or in mulch piles with all sorts of harmful bacteria, you can feed em but you might end up killing your pets, to stay safe you could keep the worms for 4-7 days in a clean environment.. and take the time to gutload them

Also make sure you get the right kind and not the worms injected with dye or other agents. Most nightcrawlers seem a little healthier than red wigglers, but as said, you should keep them for a while to allow them to pass the harmful body composition. Andy

I keep mine for about a week before feeding them. Also, though many fishermen keep theirs refrigerated, I do not. When in the fridge, the worms slow down in a sort of hibernation mode and though they will keep longer, they pass less wastes out and are also quite sluggish, and my frogs feed easier if th prey is wiggling and thrashing in front of them.
I buy them from a guy with a bait shop down the road. He raises them with plain organic soil, in a "worm farm" . (Never knew such things existed, fascinating...) So I guess my frogs "eat orcanic."

If you are spanish, this is "lombrices".

ginevive Jul 07, 2003 06:36 AM

They are very large earthworms, used as fishing bait. After a rain out in NY here, you can sneak outside and see them stretched out across the lawn, and some of them can stretch to about 3 feet long! But normally they are about 6-8 inches long, and they make excellent food for horned and other frogs.

Latin: Dendrabaena veneta
Common name: European nightcrawler

Commonly used as fishing bait...good source of calcium for frogs. Large, up to 9 inches or so. There are other varities, such as the Canadian Nightcrawler.
