Question about cresents/markings on side of rainbow boas?

I've always wondered if someone can answer;

Are the cresent markings on the sides of rainbow boas and BRB false eyes meant to fool predators?

Uncloudy,
....I think it is likely that that is exactly what their purpose is. But, those highlighted crescents may also actually help to camouflage the snake in a partially tree shaded situation.
