Pseudonaja textilis hatchlings - another update

Iwan Hendrikx Feb 01, 2005 10:31 AM

Hi all,

As promised...

Little guy with a BIG attitude...

Chewing away on my mini hook

After forcefeeding all of them for a while (every 3-4 days a mousetail) they now recognize it as food. This one is taking parts of a mouse tail on its own

Enjoy

Iwan

Absolutely incredible little snakes! I've been watching your posts since you initially posted about them hatching, and I'm extremely happy for you that you got them beginning to eat on their own. I hope they all just take off from here. Hard to imagine such a tiny worm being so dangerous eh?

Hi Iwan,

Congrats on the breeding - and the photos. One slight point that I'd like to make though is that I don't really think that the species you have is actually textilis sensu stricto. I believe that textilis is a complex of species, and although I am unable to assign which population of Pseudonaja you have there, I am certain that it is not textilis srictly speaking. There are a number of reasons why I say this, and I would be happy to pass them on to you if you like. Where did the parents come from? Should they have come from northern Australia, I recommend that you are very cautious indeed with them! Another side issue concerns the time that the neonates remained within the egg once slitting of the shell had occurred. Did you time this by any chance?

Regards and best wishes

Richard Wells
